ELI5: ADHD

The Simple Explanation of "ADHD"

Imagine your brain is like a TV with lots of channels. Most people can pick one channel and watch it. But if you have ADHD, your brain wants to watch all the channels at the same time! It’s like a super-fast monkey jumping from tree to tree — fun, but hard to slow down.

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which is a long way of saying your brain has a hard time sitting still, focusing on one thing, or waiting patiently. It’s not bad or wrong — it’s just different.

Let’s say you’re doing homework, but suddenly you notice a bird outside, then remember your toy, then get hungry… and your brain runs off in a dozen directions. That’s the “attention” part. Now, if you feel like bouncing, talking a lot, or tapping your feet, that’s the “hyperactivity” part — like having too much zoom-zoom energy.

But guess what? People with ADHD can also be super creative, full of big ideas, and great problem solvers! They might just need special ways to stay organized or take little breaks.

Some kids take medicine, like brain vitamins, to help the monkey calm down. Others use timers, checklists, or play “focus games” to stay on task.

So having ADHD is like having a super-speed brain — you just learn how to steer it!
